Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common medical condition where the blood pressure in arteries is consistently too high. It often called the 'silent killer, ' because it is always asymptomatic in initial stage . Untreated high blood pressure can cause serious damage to the heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes over time without any noticeable symptoms. Regular blood pressure checkups are the only way to detect it. Risk factors for hypertension include older age, stress, being overweight or obese, lack of physical activity, high-salt diet, genetics and excessive alcohol consumption. Management of Hypertension- Lifestyle changes like a healthy diet (low in sodium, high in potassium), regular exercise, weight management, and limiting alcohol can help to manage high blood pressure. In some cases, medication may be necessary to control blood pressure. These are several common blood pressure medicines : • ACE inhibitors • B-Blockers • Angiotensin-2 receptor blockers (ARBs) • Calcium channel blockers. • Diuretics including hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone & aldosterone antagonists • Other drugs: Alpha blockers and vasodilators may also be used.
